Remember the story of King David? He was God's chosen King of Israel. He had power and wealth. One night he could not sleep and went to the roof of his house. In the distance he could see a beautiful women bathing. He could have went back to his room. He may have thought, who am I hurting by just looking? At that point he chose a new master called lust! His new master caused him to commit adultery with that women and then kill the women's husband. Was it David's fault? After all the women was bathing out in the open and he was the King.
Yes it was his fault and his alone! He knew that what he was doing was wrong by Gods standards and his conscience convicted him. Committing Adultery and Murder are breaking God's sixth and seventh commandments. We see this is true because later when King David was confronted about his acts of adultery and murder by God's Prophet Nathan. David knew that he could not hide what he did from God and said "I have sinned against the Lord." (2 Samuel 12:13) Those that are not living the way God expects "will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:46b)
The very next thing that the Prophet Nathan said was "The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die."(2 Samuel 12:13b) Why did God so quickly forgive David's sins? He was guilty and should have died. It is because David was a man of God so when he confessed, God forgave him. God promises that He will do the same for all His people. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) The only problem is that you are not God's chosen King. You are not in the same position David was in. "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." (Isaiah 59:2) The good news is that God has made a way for you to be right with Him and have eternal life. This is the next and most important step.
